How to Choose Ballroom and Latin Dance Shoes

The most useful first pair of dance shoes is the pair that suits your lessons and fits well enough for you to concentrate on learning. Before choosing a style because it looks beautiful in a competition photo, decide where you will dance, what you are learning, and how the shoe feels when you move.

Start with your dance style and lesson plan

Tell your instructor whether you are preparing for social dancing, Ballroom, Latin, a wedding first dance, or Pro-Am competition. A practice shoe, a Latin sandal and a Standard court shoe are different options. Your teacher can recommend a suitable starting point before you spend money.

For your first visit, ask what clean, secure footwear to bring. You do not need to choose a competition shoe before you have discussed your goals in a trial or introductory lesson.

Check the exact size chart

Use the chart for the brand and model you are ordering. Check whether the listing uses US, UK or European sizing, and review the available widths. A familiar size number alone does not establish the fit.

When trying shoes, fasten them properly and take a few careful steps in a clean indoor area allowed by the retailer’s return policy. Notice whether your foot slips, the heel feels secure, or a strap presses uncomfortably. Ask for fitting help if you are unsure. Do not assume that a painful shoe will become suitable after a few lessons.

Choose a heel you can control

Heel height and shape vary across dance-shoe ranges. Higher is not automatically better. Compare the options with your instructor and choose a height that lets you stand and move comfortably for the work you will be doing.

For children, confirm age-appropriate footwear with the teacher. Families preparing for competition should also check the specific event’s footwear requirements before buying.

Match the sole to the setting

Many traditional studio dance shoes have suede soles intended for indoor use. Check the actual product specification rather than assuming every dance shoe has the same sole. Ask about your studio floor and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and care guidance. Keep indoor dance shoes away from wet outdoor surfaces.

Buying online: a short checklist

  • Confirm the exact style, size, width, heel and sole selected.

  • Read the size chart and current return conditions.

  • Check what is included in the selected product variation.

  • Allow time to assess the fit before a lesson, showcase or competition.

  • For a child, have the instructor confirm the proposed footwear before ordering.
